The Artistic Imagery of Star Wars
|
Images define our generations. Norman Rockwell, the planting
of a flag, landing on the moon, woodstock, and Star Wars are all cultural
icons that define times in our lives. With the conclusion of the Star Wars
saga, George Lucas and DK have combined to produce two excellent books, "the
Ultimate Visual Guide’, and ‘Complete Locations’.
Let’s start with the "Ultimate Book". Who defines Star Wars
like Darth Vader? His image has come to be associated with evil incarnate,
and the dark side of our souls. Obviously, once you have seen the films, you
know his final destiny. However, this book by Ryder Windham, is full of iconic
images. Storm troopers, memorable Jedi, Senator Palpatine, exotic locations
and dramatic comic book art.
Ryder has created a complete overview of the history of the
Empire, the Jedi, the Sith and the political games that went (will go on?)
In the Star Wars Universe. A ‘Behind the Scenes’ and merchandising section
finish up the book . With a 25 year franchise, six movie, animated series,
and numerous comic book resource to draw on, the result is nothing but compelling.
The illustrations are taken from films, comics, and animated
series. Well chosen and designed, the whole package is breathtaking. Forget
putting this into your book collection, leave this on your coffee table.
For the Star Wars fanatic, this book will force you back into
your collection (like that’s a bad thing) to re-read those adventures you
loved years ago. Thanks Ryder. This is truly a labor of love.
"Star Wars, Complete Locations" is an excellent sister edition
to Ultimate Visual Guide. Coming in at a weighty 176 pages, lavishly decorated
with full color photographs, this also deserves space on your coffee table/book
table.
The beauty of this presentation is that it is done in episodal
order, with a short synopsis of each film, and cross sections/artwork of each
major location. For instance, from episode VI, there is:
Jabba’s Palace and Throne room, the Battle of Endor, Ewok Village,
Death Star II, the Emperor’s Lair, and the executor Command Tower.
Each episode was featured in their own book over the years,
and this one compiles them all. You just have to love the detail and attention
this presentation boasts.
Star Wars fans, collectors and addicts take note. These books
may not be the last Star Wars guides to come out, but they are going to be
highly sought after. Guaranteed.
Find these at your local book store, or online at www.dk.com.
