King Kong Production Diaries...Or, Kong, One Day At a Time

The eagerly awaited King Kong has arrived. Joe DeVito’s novel is on the streets along with two adaptations of the original Edgar Wallace book, the Merian C Cooper film, and now the Jackson two fisted power punch of his Production Diaries and the special effects laden film are now on the street.

For those who have followed the Kong is King blog site, this DVD set is for you. Comprised of high quality video snippets from the site, it offers Kong fans a visit into the creation of the film. Ever wonder what it’s like on the set of a movie shoot? After viewing the set, and having been on set for numerous films, this is accurate. What you don’t see is the waiting.

Yes, waiting. Films take a long time to create. A simple scene that lasts twenty seconds in the finished product may take all day to shoot. How many people does it take? Producer, secretary, set designer/decorator, assistants, carpenters, electricians, artists, make up people, costumers, and so on can easily add 200 to a film staff.

What you don’t also see is the difficulty to access a set. Recently, set access has been limited even further than before due to aggressive photographers and media, so for an independent writer to visit a set, the struggle can be months of waiting for three hours onset. But don’t take photos!

Back to the content. I think the only true appreciation of this set will come after you see the film. The genesis of the shots and the finished product will complete the picture for fans. As bonuses in this limited edition set, there are four full color art prints that just rock, along with a really cool 50 page production diary/DVD holder. Even the box is cool, it looks like Carl Denhams’ suitcase!

The fine folks at Universal have produced a true collectible.
