Spaceballs....The DVD

"Once upon a time , in a galaxy far, far, away...Mel Brooks was born. And we have never looked at comedy the same again."

Oops, not quite the right beginning, but you get the idea. Mel Brooks has left few topics untouched in his wide sweep of Hollywood. He has messed with Moses, choreographed Hitler, bashed Broadway, and in 1987 he swiped a little from Star Wars, Star Trek, and created Spaceballs. With a campaign that drew heavily on the sci-fi bonanza that was sweeping our screens, he had a hit on his hands. (Love that alliteration!).

Joining Mel was partner Ronny Graham, and actors John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Dick Van Patten, Daphne DeZuniga, and Joan Rivers in a film that has now seen renewed profile.

John Candy played Barf, the half man, half dog mascot to Bill Pullman on the run from Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and Pizza the Hut. Along the way, a (Druish) princess escapes marriage and trapises the galaxy in the Space fitted motor home. Mel Brooks, as is customary, has a cameo role and passes on his wit and wisdom. The Schwarz rules the galaxy, and comedy/parody are the rudder.

This is one film you either love or hate. But, you also have to be in the right frame of mind. Turn off your brain, click the Star Wars rocks filter, and engage your ludicrous muscle, it will get a work out. Groan out loud. It will help. I did. This could have been a rotter like "Hardware Wars", but Mel had a lot more money to work with, and better appliances. So it works

The 2 disc set is worth the extra money, as the special features include interviews and commentary by Mel Brooks, bloopers, a John Candy interview, trailers (not manufactured homes), art, art, and the occasional trivia game!
