I need to say up front that this was not my favorite episode of Doctor Who. I don't know why, but I just could not get 'into' the story. Maybe it was the very simple 'special effects' or the fact that to me the plot just didn't have anything to keep it going, or the extras dancing around in what looked like high-school style giant ant and Butterfly costumes. I don't know.
Not to mention sets that sound and look like they were put together at the last minute by a crew that simply didn't care for much that they were doing.
This is just one I will be able to not watch again in the future. And yes I know; probably most of the Doctor Who fans in the world think this is the greatest episode of all time. Can't help it, I just didn't have a good time watching it.
What happens is, once more, a strange force causes the TARDIS to land on the planet Vortis. Here, the Doctor along with Ian, Barbara and Vicki become -wrapped up- (sorry) in the plans of the butterfly-like Menoptra who plan to retake their planet from the Animus that is slowly covering it with its web-like kingdom, the Carsenome.
The Doctor and his friends are able to stop the Animus by joining with a party of Menoptra and the underground-dwelling Optra.
To be honest, outside of the connection to a lot of good (as well as bad) movies from the 1950's about giant insects and Japanese films with enormous flying Butterflies or wasps, this episode has little to really offer.
While the Doctor and his party fight against giant insects, there is little suspense or edginess to the story. Sorry, but that is my feeling.
However, the special stuff added to the DVD is well worth listening to and watching. Included is a short feature on the making of the episode as well as William Hartnell reading from the Doctor Who Annual 1965.
