For me, one of the best action films of 2002 was a little gem called "The
Transporter" with Jason Statham.
I
always wanted a sequel to this baby and I finally got it this year. Returning
as Frank is Statham and watching him in action one has to wonder why he was
not in the running to be the new James Bond.
The man is fast, talented and has the look and style of Bond. The character
of the Transporter is nothing short of a Super Hero. Well, maybe a dark super
hero, but still one nonetheless.
The script by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen (of Fifth Element fame) and the
directing by Louis Leterrier (who brought us Unleashed earlier this year) demonstrate
just how over-the-top a film like this should be.
Lets be honest, the film is silly. It is good fun, but it is also one of the
funniest films that came out this year. And the best part of it is that it is
not afraid to poke fun at it own silliness. The audience I was with, including
my good friend Nana, would break into applause, laughter or outright groans
at the almost impossible feats that Frank performed.
In
some ways, this sequel is better then the first film, but the first one had
parts of it that will still win a viewer, and where the first one took itself
in a more serious vein, the second film is campy and very tongue in cheek.
This time Frank Martin (Statham) is on a temporary assignment doing a favor
for a friend. He is driving Jack Billings (Hunter Clary), a kid with stinking
rich parents (Valletta and Modine), to and from grade school.
The complicated plot deals with a kidnapping, a killer virus, lots of car chases
and a killer who likes hot guns along with her bra and panties and sharp high
heels. Yes, it is a woman (Nauta). Her boss and lover Gianni (Gassman), is a
villain cut from the same cloth as many of the better Bond bad guys.
This movie does not need deep thought. What you are most likely to do on the
way home is talk about what a completely silly film you just watched and what
was the most outrageous stunt in the film?
Was it the nifty bomb removal? The smashing through the wall and landing on
the other roof? Driving along the edges of two buildings? No matter what it
was, you will have hours of entertainment simply talking about the movie.
And this is a film you should watch with someone you can talk about movies with.
It is not a film to watch with someone who is not a movie buff, or someone who
watches a film for the 'artistic value' or the 'moral implications'. Screw that;
just watch the movie with some friends who can enjoy a good time.
This is just what we needed this summer, a high-powered, pure popcorn movie
that really delivers the promise of action and excitement on the screen. The
film runs just over an hour and a half and is rated PG-13. There are a few fairly
intense action scenes, some sexual stuff, very little nudity and some rough
language. It would be ok for older kids, 11-12 and teens.
But Statham should be the next Bond. Or at least give us more Transporter films.
