From ShockerFest

Hello there Larry,

My name is Brandon Kane, we met at ShockerFest. I just wanted to let you know I've visited your website and it's really great stuff!

Picking up from where we left off in the theater on Saturday afternoon - I've gotta tell you that I agree wholeheartedly with your review of "Superman Returns"....after 15-odd years of literal Development Hell, with threats of gay robot sidekicks, giant spiders, McG, and a black-clad, angst-ridden Nicolas Cage as Tim Burton's Superman, it's pretty amazing that the movie to emerge from that muck is actually pretty damned good....not perfect, but definitely a high-quality film.

I was always kind of on the fence with the choice of Singer, but after hearing that it was to be a sequel to Donner's original film and the first sequel I was sold. It didn't disappoint me one bit, and I'm anxious to see Singer's team carry on with the series now that it's in good hands.

Well anyway, I just wanted to chime in. It was great meeting you at the fest, and thanks so much again for your very kind comments on our little $400 schlock movie.

Have a great day, and keep up the great work on the site! :)

B!

Also from Brandon, in reference to the aforementioned film....

Hey Larry,

WOW! Thanks so very much for such a great review! All our cast and crew are very enthusiastic about the review, I sent the link out after I got it from you. Really, thank you very much for the opportunity as well as the comments. We're all pretty excited that there's people out there who 'get it'. I'm not sure some of my friends or family have actually realized that it's a comedy yet.

And I don't mind if you send it out to as many as you'd like to. :) We're really just excited that there are like-minded people out there who can appreciate this kind of stuff for what it is.

I think that behind most of the great schlock and B-movies is a spectacularly failed vision that, perhaps with a little more money or a little more love, might have actually resulted in some pretty good films. Not great, but pretty good. I mean, "Devil Girl From Mars" rocks, but man....if the investors just gave those guys the extra $10,000 they probably asked for and two more weeks of production....who knows what type of mayhew would have ensued. ;)

And sometimes when you're watching a great B-movie (or Z-movie), you can see hints of that spectacular vision, but it doesn't quite shine through the schlocky elements: bad direction, bad lighting, bad sound, bad acting, etc. The poor bastards tried hard to overcome their limitations, but just fell short. So I always feel a little bittersweet after watching some of the great schlock flicks because of those beautifully flawed visions.

We wanted to make our "Diabolical Tales" movies be kind of like that too.

So that fact that you dug our movie enough to write about it really means a lot to us, Larry. Thank you very much!

Well, that's twice I have been told I 'got it'. Do I need to go to the Doctor? Brandon, you guys shot a fun film for very little money. You should be proud. You have a right to be.

Hi Larry, I’m the publicist for the film “Dead in the Water”, enjoyed reading your review. If you are interested in interviewing the writer and director for more insight of feature story, would be happy to put them on the phone for you. Thanks again for your support. Best, Lauri -- Lauri Blue BLUE ENTERTAINMENT

Lauri, the PCU will ALWAYS support low budget film makers who look like they actually CARE about the industry. I and the rest of the crew wish you the best of luck and want to be in your next movie.

Larry -- thank you so very much for the review and lovely words about our film. I'm forwarding this on to cast and crew right away. I will let you know how our distribution pans out.

Thank you again,

Piotr, I liked the movie. It was easy to write about something done well and it was a pleasure as well.

An Unbiased Comment!!

Hi Larry; This is Trace from the Frank Cho message board (yeah I know, I don't post frequently, but I keep up with things). I just have a comment about the western reviews section of the Penguin Comics site. With Tim's love of the old westerns I found it kind of surprising that there is no mention of AC Comics Best of the West title. To my knowledge it is the only western title still in publication and it is full of classic western tales from the 40's and 50's. Another comment is that Tim's bio is very encouraging to me. I also have had that creative desire since I was a child and also ended up in the technical realm as far as jobs go, so there is still hope for me. Thanks Chuck Tracy FanForce http://www.femforce-femfans.com/fanforce1.pdf Because comics were meant to be fun. AC Comics, last of the first independents

Editor:

Ok, so he's not totally unbiased. I can't control Tim, our staff is like a force of nature. But, if interest is there, he might be as well.

Passion Review

Dan Markson (DM1965@.....)

Sir: While I appreciated the article and the review of The

Passion of Christ on your site, I did have a problem with the

comment you made "WITHOUT PROMOTING ANTI SEMITIC ATTITUDES"

seeming to make some point that the film was not hateful to Jews. The movie WAS. It depicted Jews as evil and without any love for others. This attitude has been used for generations to suppress, torture and murder Jews. You comment that it does not promote Anti Semitic feelings is insulting. Gibson had the chance to help right a wrong that has gone on for far too long. He could have made the Sanhedrin more sympathetic, more feeling. He did not have to make them so evil. There is no real historical evidence of Jews acting in this manner, not in anything outside the Gospels. Gibson could have helped lessen the animosity that still causes hatred toward the Jews. I have always felt your reviews were excellent. However, after this I might have to start wondering about your own feeling toward Jews. It might be a good idea to look into your own heart and see if you harbor any hatred toward them.

Dan Markson.

From the Editor:

You know it's funny. I just had this argument the other day. First, it is still my feelings that the film did not promote hatred toward all Jews. Yes, it did portray the Jewish leaders or at least some of them, as power hungry, greedy, frightened individuals who set out to kill a man they were afraid of. And, again I agree with you that the only "Historical Record" is the four Gospels. And that is where Gibson got his main inspiration.

Had Gibson changed the story to show compassion on the hand of the Jewish leaders, it would have been a lie to the original material. Had he allowed Jesus to pull out an Uzi and cut down the Roman cohort, it would also have destroyed the original material. Gibson portrayed the leaders in the manner that was presented in the Four Books called Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It is in these four books where we find the story of Jesus. It really does not matter if you believe what they say to see this movie and enjoy it.

You don't have to know everything about all the people at the Alamo to enjoy the movie when it comes out this summer do you? At the same time, you know the basic story. At least if you took American History. Or ever watched an old western on TV. 180 some men stood off over 2000 soldiers of the Mexican Army. That is what history has told us. Now, if the movie sticks close to the known history then we are aware of what will happen. Please tell me Americans know what happened? However, if the Texian

defenders start pulling out .50 Caliber machine guns, mortors, Grenade launchers and a Terminator shows up, then we can pretty much say that this is not a film about the Alamo. Same with The Passion of the Christ. Had Gibson changed the story from what is known, it would have changed the story, and the film would no longer have been about Christ. It would have been called "The Passion of Steve" or something. Hope this helps. Sorry to go on so long, but this is not an answer that can be an easy or simple one.

Grace Akins (hisgrace@....

I wanted to say how much I appreciated the comments you made about the Archie reference in Wizard magazine a few weeks ago. I get so tired of Wizard and how they almost sell out to the 'modern' comic book companies with their blood and gore and "realism". Archie is a good company, that still tries to have some sort of family values. I think they are perfect for younger kids to grow up with, andthey need the support of web-sites and columes like your.

Thanks Grace

From the Editor:

Grace, I hear you. I am getting sort of tired of all the 'realism' in todays Comics as well. If I want 'realism' I can turn on my TV. When I want super-heros, I go to Comic Books.

Archie is a great company, and I am proud to be one of their fans.

Tim

Thanks for the link and the great review! You definitely understand the attitude that's needed to read and enjoy those comics today. They have a charm that is long gone from comics while still providing plenty of excitement and thrills. I'm glad you liked the book. I'll try to keep finding stuff to write about for the column that's worthy of a sequel! It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

Holy s*&^, I can't believe you are still around. I used to read Larry's stuff years ago whey it was just the Pacific Comics Update. I picked it up in Las Vegas back in 1995 and read you for a couple of years.

I always enjoyed the articles and the honesty that Larry and his friends showed to their readers. The way you reviewed movies was great. Funny, entertaining and usually on the mark.

I think my favorite article you ever wrote was one about child abuse. Your openess and honesty there helped me to come out and say what had happened to me when I was a kid.

Your work has always been good, and I am glad I found out about you.

David

In Reference to

Language Police: Censorship in our Schoolbooks

Larry,

Thank you for perfectly outlining why my wife and I decided to home school our children. The school system is not the same one that I was released from back in 1980. There are too many things that make public school a breeding ground for mediocrity. I remember being cursed with advanced reading capabilities at an early age. Instead of suppressing this my teachers would bring in things for me to read. I burned through

so much material in grade school that the teachers were worried I was doing nothing but reading. This wasn't true of course. There were movies, television, comics, even girls eventually. Later I was tested to find that I could naturally speed read. Somewhere in

the vicinity of 1000 words a minute with over 90 percent retention. It still bothers my family that I have anywhere from four to six books going at the same time and don't lose my place or confuse the plots. I rarely reread brain candy. More literate works get repeated readings, but not many. I encourage all my children to read and I read to them as well. If you don't have the luxury of home schooling then you MUST read to your children. This is not an option. Make time and read to them what you would have read. Good article Larry.

---------------------

And another letter about that article

Karrie Konner (Karriekon@.....)

While I agree with the writer that schools must teach history and classic literature as they were originally intended, I think that books should be more age appropriate. I don't think that Fanny Hill or Lady Chatterley should be read by a Junior High student, or any other type of sexually explicit material. I also don't believe that students should be forced to read anything they do find offensive.

Roy Bannon (roybannon@.....)

I think it look's fu&x great.  The Batman review was ok, but what about some reviews of stuff that is not so vanilla?  Do they still make adult comics?

Roy

From the Editor:

Yes Roy. They still make adult comics.  We are thinking of putting up an adult section, dealing with more mature books.  So if you are over 18 you will be able to get into the area.

Mary Tower (Silverdollarqueen2002@......)

I like it. Colorful, clean. The old site was fun, but now that you have people who  know what to do, it looks so much better.  When will the rest of the links and the information about the others be working? And are you going to include articles or reviews of Card Games this time? What about reviews of mainstream books? Will you be looking at sci fi, horror, or 'how to' books? Still, I always enjoyed your writing. I missed you when you left Cultcuts. Your reviews were funny and usually on the spot.

Keep up the good work.

Kathy

From the Editor:

Thanks Mary... uhm Kathy... I get confused. Thanks for the good words and yes, we will be covering Card Games this time. At least we will when I get someone who knows about them. As to mainstream books, we will be trying to review both Science Fiction and some Horror books as well as books about various parts of the Comic and Entertainment Industry.  I'm glad you like my movie reviews. We will be doing even more, and the Yahoo Archives will have my older ones.

Since we are still sort of new, I decided to reprint some of the letters we have gotten over time from our old Print Magazine, the PCU.  It was a lot of fun reading these, and remembering. I hope you will give us your comments.
