One thing I often fear is reading a brand new book. Well, not fear like the fear of being eaten by giant gerbils ticked off about that stupid wheel, but still it scares me.
I mean, what if it truly sucks? I have wasted my money and now I have to tell people how bad it is, possibly spoiling the hopes and dreams of somebody who has been thinking about this for years. They might have invested all their money into the book and even maxed out Mom's credit cards and boy will she be mad when she finds out.
I hate that feeling. It is with a deep sense of regret that I sometimes start a new book.
But not this time. This one is a winner, what with Giffen and Denton working on it there was very little chance it would have crashed and burned in the dung-heap of crappy books.
Giffen is one of the most talented creators in the industry, and even though he has sometimes not clicked with me, more often then not his stuff satisfies like a nice mean. And this is no exception. His creativity and humor shines out like a light in a fog of Crisis and Hero Wars; he makes me glad with this book and a couple of others that creators and writers like him still exist in our industry.
Shannon Eric Denton might not be as recognizable to some as a Comic professional, but would be more familiar as the master behind the storyboards on Paramount Pictures "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" and currently works at storyboarding the live action feature "Paul Bunyan".
While actively working at new challenges in television and feature film development he is also in development with Jerry Bruckheimer Films, FoxKids, Jon Peters Entertainment, the Jacobson Company, Flat Iron Films, DeepRiver Productions, Out of the Blue Entertainment and MapleShade Films among other companies with his own creations. He also acted as a storyboard director on the upcoming TV series Dan Dare and has worked on live action projects ranging from "Ally McBeal" to "Casper meets Wendy" to pilot episodes for Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
In the late 1990's he contributed to the design and development of almost every action adventure show produced by the Fox Kids Network including the "X-Men", "Spider-Man" and the Annie nominated "Silver Surfer" series.
Shannon has had the opportunity to work for every major comics publisher on projects ranging from "Superman" to "Spawn" to "Star Wars". In 2000 Shannon and Patrick Coyle founded the critically acclaimed publishing entity Komikwerks. His off hours are spent publishing his creator owned stories through Komikwerks and other publishers.
So, I think he knows a bit about illustration and Comics.
So, just what is Tabula Rasa? It is, simply put, a dang good Comic story and what looks like it could be a really good movie if done right.
The story deals with a dying cop who has his soul moved into the body of an almost indestructible Golem by a Rabbi; and now the cop must deal with those that killed him within seven days or lose his soul for good.
I was impressed with the story, but even more so with the way the art itself lent to the over all flavor of the story. Matt Jacobs has done a great job delivering an image to the reader of oppressive heat, humidity, and lots of creepy bugs skittering around.
Very well done, Mr. Jacobs.
The book is filled with action, suspense and not a little humor, both from the Rabbi and the Cop. Frankly, I think we need more Rabbi's like this. I don't want to spoil the story to much for you, but the reasons behind the Rabbi's actions will make complete sense.
If you have not seen this one, go seek it out while you have the chance. It is a first class book.
