This summer get geared up for one of the best movies of the year, Serenity, by reading this nice little three issue short series by Joss Whedon, director of the upcoming SF movie.
Serenity is based on the very good Fox SF western series Firefly.
Even though the TV show went off the air a couple of years ago it had a group of fans that just would not let the show die. After the success of the DVD collection that included several never before seen episodes, the decision was made to release the big screen version.
Now, Dark Horse is offering this three-issue prequel to the movie to act as a type of bridge between the TV show and the film.
Joss Whedon is a major Comic fan and the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and told an audience at WonderCon about the book: "It’s going to be coming out starting in the summer. ... It's going to be written by Brett Matthews [who authored Dark Horse Angel comics] from a story we're working on."
Each issue will include three variant covers drawn by different artists, featuring all nine lof the main Serenity characters. "The first of which, of course, is John Cassaday, who will be drawing Mal [Nathan Fillion]," he said. "I have seen just a few of the covers. I called basically my dream team of artists. Nobody turned me down, and I've seen a few of them, and they're extraordinary."
Serenity is the story of a ship full of truly nice people; mercenaries, outlaws, fugitives, and the obligatory prostitute working along the deeper regions of space. The crew of Serenity often takes on jobs that might seem a bit… questionable.. in the eyes of the law, but each of them has the legendary heart of gold, and each is loyal to their friends. Finding themselves again broke and in possession of a whole bunch of very large firearms, which is a great way to show how Whedon mixes excitement and characters to deliver a truly good story.
God I would love to meet this guy and ask him some questions.
