Family Bones
written by Shawn Granger
King Tractor Press.
Young Sean would be better off as a ward of the state. Shuffled from one dysfunctional
family member to the next, he is finally inserted into the family of his uncle
and aunt, Ray and Faye Copland. While from a distance, it looks like a Norman
Rockwell opportunity for Sean, it isn't long before he becomes involved in a
macabre series of events that will cumulate in the trial of the oldest married
couple in Missouri for murder.
According to all the press releases, Family Bones is based on the notorious
true murder case for Ray and Faye Copeland, who used unwitting young men on
criminal activities such as cattle and horse stealing and finally began to murder
these men. Faye even went so far as to make a quilt out of their clothing.
Nice couple. So, Sean a nice city boy with no idea of what life in the country
or on a farm is like, is forced into a rigorous life right off the bat. And
while this might not always be bad, here it is. Used like a draught animal in
many cases, Sean is forced to quickly adapt to a life style he is not used to,
as well as the emotional and physical anger and abuse Ray uses to keep his family
in line.
The best thing about this book is that it is based on actual events. The worst
thing about it, is that it is based on actual events. The depths that people
will sink to just for a little extra money is amazing and shameful.
Family Bones is a well written, well conceived book with a lot of potential.
I hope the rest of the series is as good as the first two issues.
