Earth has been invaded and small town teen, Milton Bloom, comes
face to face with an army of giant decaying Martians as his quiet Dirtville
becomes the front line in a strange new war.
The first thing you notice flipping through the pages of Rotting in Dirtville is how much it reminds one of the "B" monster movies of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Hot Rods, clothing styles, Giant Robot Zombies attacking everyone, things like that. The second thing you might notice is how sparse most of the dialogue seems to be.
Finally as you sit down to read the book, you might notice how underneath the Zombie war, souped up cars and wise acre youth, there is actually a story dealing with humanity, fear, friendship and trust.
The really sad part is how quickly it demonstrates that friendship and trust can degenerate into anger and the desire to simply strike out at someone else.
Rotting in Dirtville tells the story of Milton Bloom, a young man who has lost his home and his parents because of the war. As he tells his story to young Betsy, we discover that his current dreams are pretty simple.
But when Betsy's brother enters the scene, a fight ensues causing someone to lose some teeth and do a little name-calling of their own.
The later part of the story reads like a car chase in one of those movies I mentioned. Milton saves the day but at a cost many would seem as too much to bear.
An excellent story, touching on many styles and with the wonderful work done
by the artist (also by Callahan) are very well drawn. Almost a mixture of Moebius
and Ben Templesmith, it gives you the same chills Templesmith gives while combining
that futuristic as well as the moody effects that make your nerves start screaming.
Thanks guys for a truly entertaining book.
