Darkman
vs. The Army of Darkness
By Roger Stern and Kurt Busiek

Covers by George Perez, Nick Bradshaw
Review by Larry Stanley
I loved Darkman; well, the movie anyway. I was never that pleased with the
"Big M's" Comic book. Maybe I was just to plebian, but I just didn't
enjoy it that much. It seemed like it was never sure what it wanted to be. But,
the movie was pretty good. I enjoyed the premise and the action. And I love
Ash and his adventures as well.
So, put them together and what do you have? Well, in the wrong hands a bloody
mess. But, we are dealing with Kurt Busiek, the guy who brought Conan back from
the abyss and did one of the best Superman mini-series of all time, "Superman:
Secret Identity" and Roger Stern, the guy who wrote one of the best Superman
novels I ever read, "The Death And Life Of Superman," plus the Smallville
novel, Strange Visitors.
These two can do very little wrong, and with different covers by both George
Perez and Nick Bradshaw, and interior work by James Fry, is there any chance
this book could suck?
Well, sure; but not a big chance. This is the ultimate crossover; forget most
of the others. We are talking about Ash Williams and Darkman, fer crist sake.
The story starts with Darkman's former girlfriend and her friend saying the
words from the Necronomican that release all sorts of baddies and deadites on
the world, and possessing Julie.
In an attempt to save both Julie and the world, the two call on the legendary
hero who is told of in the Book of the Dead to come to their aid.
But who will Ash fight first? The Army of Darkness or the Darkman himself?
Army of Darkness/Darkman takes over the normal spot for the regular AOD series
and will be bi-monthly for four issues.
I will admit I never expected to see these two together but now that I have
seen it, it makes a lot of sense. They are both scarred men, both physically
and emotionally; and both want the same thing in the end. But is that to defeat
evil or to be what passes for 'normal' once more?
I can't wait to read all four issues. I think it will be a kick-a** ride.
