CRYPTOZOO CREW DISCOVERS UNIQUE AUDIENCES IN LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS
Cryptozoology is the search for unknown animals.
NBM's CRYPTOZOO CREW has taken this one step further, finding new and
unique audiences in schools and libraries with its stories of Cryptozoologist
Tork Darwyn and his adventurous schoolteacher wife Tara.
The first graphic novel collected numerous short stories that ranged
from searching for Yeti in the Himalayas, dinosaurs in Africa and Mothman
in rural Virginia. The escapades featured comical repartee between the
brawny Tork and his more grounded, blonde bombshell wife.
Volume Two,
"The Call of the Thunderbird" is now available. This time, readers are
treated to a full-length 96-page story, in full color and featuring
a cover by good girl artist extraordinaire, Frank Cho. The new story
continues to provide the type of entertainment well suited to a wide
range of reader.
It is full of wild action and Tork and Tara's raucous chemistry, which
first made the series popular with all ages and both sexes. So popular
that the first printing of Volume 1 sold out quickly, mainly through
the school and library systems.
There are many reasons for CRYPTOZOO CREW'S success. As Melissa T. Jenvey
of the New York Public Library points out in the School Library Journal,
"The stories will appeal to a variety of ages and some are laugh-out-loud
funny. More lighthearted than some other graphic novels out there, this
one fills the goofy niche nicely."
Tina Coleman, writing for the American Library Association describes
the series as one that "promises wacky adventures, loony characters
and critters, and lousy puns; and it delivers on all counts. In the
post X-Files world, it's hard not to love Tork and Tara's madcap Mulder
and Scully."
For series creators, Allan Gross and Jerry Carr, this appeal is a natural
response to their influences and belief that comics provide a universal
language.
"I wanted
to write something without the angst," said writer Allan Gross, who
sees the upbeat series as a mix of "The Crocodile Hunter", "Indiana
Jones" and "Romancing the Stone".
Jerry Carr's artwork is perfect for this type of story as it is clean,
yet quirky, adding to the mirth and infectious nature of the stories.
Making stories accessible to a wide audience is nothing new to Gross
and Carr, working out of Insight Studios Group, perennial groundbreakers
that have always attempted to make comics as accessible as possible.
Allan Gross is also currently the co-creator and writer of ROADSONG
from TOKYOPOP and co-writer with artist Mark Wheatley on "Miles the
Monster", a new series based on the mascot at NASCAR racetrack, Dover
International Speedway.
