Nextwave
#1Bif! Bam! Pow! This is pure superhero ACTION!!! We start in media res and Grant
Morrisson better start eating his heart out. Even he couldn't throw us into
the action as fast as Ellis does. We are first introduced to Elsa Bloodstone
and The Captain relaxing and enjoying coffee outside a mysterious construction
site. Then, whammo, we are onboard the H.A.T.E. Aeromarine and meeting Dirk
Anger, director of H.A.T.E.(Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort). Flash! Now, we see
Monica Rambeau and Aaron Stack at the helm of the Shockwave Rider. We keep speeding
along and meet my favorite character to make it out of Secret Wars 2, Boom-Boom!
Along the way we discover that H.A.T.E. is getting funding from the Beyond Corporation,
which was apparently once known as S.I.L.E.N.T. a former terrorist organization.
Yeah, it gets a little crazy. So, it comes out that the Beyond Corporation is
actually here to dig up and release Fin Fang Foom! And release him they do,
purple underpants and all.
This story flies along and just gets ridiculous at points. That's why I loved it. This is just silly fun. Superheroes getting angry and fighting robots and dragons. The dialogue is crisp and Immonen's art is just vibrant and outstanding. Ellis has really outdone himself here by taking new characters and some of Marvel's also-rans and making them into an interesting, edgy and funny team. This book has it all from the design of the cover to the fact that it has it's own theme song to the team's motto "Healing America by beating people up".
I think what really amazes me about this comic is that it exists at all. Marvel rarely goes the edgy or crazy route. The fact that they took such a chance to give a man like Ellis free reign with one of their books and publicized it so widely speaks volumes. Marvel has truly grown up the past couple years and we are all profiting from that. So, to Marvel, Warren Ellis, Stuart Immonen and all the rest involved with this series I say, kudos! May this book see issue 100 one day.
