Review by Larry Stanley
Ah, to be a nerd in a post-apocalyptic world; a world where all the basic comforts that have made you into the couch potato you currently exist as are suddenly gone for good. What would you do in such a situation? How would you react?
Would you "suck it up" and be uncomplaining and try to be content?
Or would you spend most of the time crying and hating the life you have been given? All of us like to see ourselves as the strong type, willing to undergo hardship to survive and even to help others.
But the reality is that most of us would be crying for our mommy at the first sound of the siren as it cuts through the air. And that is more or less what Peter Bagge's new miniseries deals with.
Our hero is a former middle manager for a software company, and his limited survival skills are constantly put to the test, and each time they always come up short! With his childhood friend Jeff Beasley bullying him around as Jeff wallows in his newfound state as the alpha-male of the pair, the two of them simply watch as society keeps falling apart around them and wonder at what is going to happen to them.
According to Peter Bagge, “The idea for this hit me when I had no internet access for a day or two, and I felt like I was going to shrivel up and die because of it. This got me to thinking how severely lacking I am in any sort of survival skills, and forced me to speculate how long I’d last if I was forced to rely on them. Conclusion: not long! I also concluded that an objective observer would probably get a million laughs out of watching me try to survive in such a situation, and thus an idea for a new comical book was born. "Apocalypse Nerd is an attempt to make light of my own worst fears, as in how I'd react in the wake of a nuclear holocaust. I don't think the comic is TOO accurate in that regard, since I doubt I’d survive for more than a day, but that wouldn't make for a very interesting story, would it?"
As an added bonus, each issue will also feature a back up story with a humorous setting dealing with America's Founding Fathers, entitled “Founding Fathers Funnies”
Apocalypse Nerd will be a six-issue quarterly series, and carry a retail price of $2.99.
