Once more, Dark Horse journeys into the darker side of several of the industries brightest minds and set out this small but tasty treat for us.
As the third book in this series, along with Books of Hauntings and Witchcraft, we are given several little snacks and a number of really good main dishes. From the Mike Mignola Hellboy story using Shakespeare and grave robbing to Eric Powell’s wonderful serving all the way through the classic deserts from Jill Thompson, the best story about dogs I have seen this year, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. .
The stories range from downright scary to slightly humorous, and will tantalize the taste buds of any horror or comic gourmet. Along with the above mentioned, we are given delights from Guy Davis, Kelly Jones and a neat little snack from the man himself, Robert E. Howard along with many others.
While there are several books of this nature out right now (Horror seems to be gaining a new audience now. Maybe it is true, everything runs in circles; of course this means that we need to prepare for more animals with super-power books) this one is both decorative and fun to read. It would make a nice book to have lying around when your snooty horror friends show up.
You know, the ones who make fun of your Comic collection while secretly they go home and play with their Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th Action figures? Leave it just lying there and let one of them pick it up, then when they open it and get that ‘look’ on their face, dare them to read a couple of the stories.
This is great work, Dark Horse and Scott Allie; while I think you would have a hard time topping this one, I do hope you have something else planned for the future.
What about Mythical Modern Animals? Yeti, Bigfoot, Skunk Monster, Chupa..Cuppa… Chulap… That thing down in Mexico that attacks people and animals. Or Flying Saucers?
Feel free to use any of my ideas. No charge. Just mention my name. Oh, and sorry about all the food references. Patti has me on a diet again.
Earlier today, I saw a picture of a steak in a magazine. I ate the picture. Burp…
